Bainbridge Island facility cuts costs
and helps the environemnt |
KENT - For the City of Bainbridge Island's Department of Public Works, recently installed technology is helping to cut operational expenses at its new maintenance facility and protect the environment.
At the heart of the new facility's advanced systems is a Shenandoah/Columbia L24 Waste Oil Boiler, distributed by Northwest Industrial Equipment of Kent. THe boiler will cut operating costs at the building, located at 7305 Hidden Cove Road, by burning used motor oil, transmission and other petroleum-based fluids from the city's fleet of vehicles to efficiently heat the public works department's maintenance bays.
Chris St. Romain, facilities fleet/equipment lead at the City of Bainbridge Island Department of Public Works, expects the waste oil boiler to dramatically reduce heating bills. He said using recycled oil will save the city about 60 cents per gallon compared to the propane system i previously used to heat its maintenance facility. And the city no longer pay s acompany to haul away and recycle its used motor oil.
"The boiler is helping us achieve a self-contained operation," said St. Romain. "The temperature in the maintenance area stays about 68 degrees, and we would be able to generate heat and operate even during a power outage or in case of any storm or earthquake."
The boiler also is helping hte city to sustain its efforts to be a steward ofthe environment, said Howard Levens,CEO of Northwest Industrial Equipment. "Each waste oil boiler meets on-site used oil recycling guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Puget Sound Air Pollution Control Agency and the State Department of Ecology."
St. Romain said the new facility also id equipped with self-contained fire fighting systems and other automated techonology designed to increase the public works department's efficiency and effectiveness.
Northwest Industrial Equipment is the exclusive distributor of Shenandoah/Columbia heaters and boilers. The first is located at 22023 70th Ave. S., Kent 98032.
